Last week Robot Enterainment achieved its goal of raising over $2000 as part of the 24hr stream in support of Extra Life. Justin “SixOkay” Korthof and “Danger Mike” among other bots stuck with the community on Twitch throughout the duration. This special stream also featured over three hours of BRAND NEW gameplay footage of the upcoming new update for Orcs Must Die! Unchained.

We get a look at all the brand new maps, brand new prologue and the re-worked heroes for the refreshed survival mode. Not only that but we get to see a first look at some new concepts including unstable rifts where rifts appear suddenly on a map spawning minions if not destroyed in time. Plus the new weekly challenge where each week players get a new unique challenge where Robot sets the map, the loadout, the heroes and a special type of objective. Ideas such as defending wave after waves of Gatebreakers where the only way to gain money for traps is by picking up coin drops. Designer Doug “ShadeDev” Houserman was on-hand to give us some thoughts on the direction for weekly challenges, commenting that they will generally be puzzle based or changing the way people think, such as playing maps without being able to use any traps, or just 1 hp / rift point.

Next OMDU update features a new story prologue

The three hour stream also showed us that the in-game visuals have been improved and the physics has been ramped up a few notches. Heroes move faster and visual effects on traps and abilities are bigger and bolder. Speaking of heroes, be sure to check out the video footage below which shows a number of heroes in action, all with their new re-worked abilities. The bots have been hard at work at the studio on the next big update to Orcs Must Die! Unchained. The next update, version 1.6 will bring major changes with the removal of siege mode and the renewed focus on Survival. One of the objectives of the next release is to bring back that classic OMD feel from the previous games to OMDU. According to the blog post on the OMD website, Robot has aimed to deliver this in the following ways:

• Faster and More Furious – Faster hero speeds, squishier minions, bigger physics – the classic OMD feeling has never looked and felt quite so glorious.
• Every Hero Rebuilt for Survival – Never again will players fear that their favorite hero can’t keep up in Survival Mode. Every single hero in the game has been rebalanced for Survival, giving players tons of hero combination options.
• All New Map Structure – There’s a whole new way to play through your favorite Battlegrounds in OMDU’s new difficulty tiers. Players must prove their worth before moving up to the next big challenge.
• Brand New Prologue – All new players will start with a brief campaign to get them started with all of the OMD knowledge they’ll need to bust heads in the Survival Battlegrounds.

The new prologue will be an great way of engaging new players to the game, and it will be backed by a small story. All of the heroes are being re-worked to be Survival ready, no longer will you need to worry about effectiveness of some heroes not being so great in the survival mode. More minions, more maps await! Oh, and Mr Moneybags is back too!

Super 24hr Stream!

To give eager fans a preview of the upcoming patch, Robot Entertainment will be hosting a 24 hour stream this Friday, 18th November. The 24 hour stream is also in aid of Extra Life, the 24 hour gaming marathon to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. A great cause to support and you can help Robot Entertainment achieve its funding goals via the Extra Life website.
