Hero Academy and Orcs Must Die! Unchained to shut down
Dean

Unfortunately it has been announced today that online play for the original Hero Academy, Hero Academy 2 and Orcs Must Die! Unchained will be ceasing later this year, on April 8th 2019. The population of players on these games has reduced and regrettably no longer viable for Robot to provide on-going support for online play.

Orcs Must Die! 1 & 2 will continue to be available for play on Steam.

It is a challenging world for small independent developers like Robot and sometimes these tough decisions have to be made. By taking Hero Academy and Orcs Must Die! Unchained to sunset, Robot is able to focus more exclusively on TWO new exciting games which are currently in development.

Players and fans will no doubt reflect fondly on the great times they had playing these titles. Many of the community played a large part in helping to shape these games thanks to the high level of engagement Robot has with its community and its fans. We’ll remember these good times as we move into the future.

To help keep the spirit of these games going a little longer, Robot is offering active players who log in free in-game currency. Perfect if you have cards you have been wanting to unlock in Hero Academy or perhaps some heroes you have yet to try out in Orcs Must Die! Unchained. Be sure to make the most of this free in-game currency offer running until April 8th 2019.

For more information about this news, and information about the free in-game currency offer please take a look at the announcement on the Robot Entertainment website.

Future

Moving forwards Robot’s attention is firmly on the delivery of two brand new games. While there is no news to share on what these games are, be sure to stay turned for news and announcements in 2019. The bots are working hard at the factory and the studio is currently recruiting for a number of positions. We will keep you up to date, right here at REF.

Hero Academy 2 has a new faction on the block – the Ketsali. This new faction is quite unique both in play style and art design making an interesting new entry to the game.

The Ketsali can be summed up pretty much as “bird people” with iconic design style of bright colours and feathers. They have a unique play style, with their units and spells focusing more around movement and board control, expect to see lots of cards for anti-movement and movement buffs. Units are diverse from warriors like War Talon to various animals.

The Ketsali are available now in Hero Academy 2 and they are completely free! Players can unlock Ketsali cards from card packs by playing the game or in store with a new Ketsali starter pack. For top tips on how to get started with the new faction you can also check out the blog on the Hero Academy 2 website which covers strenghts, weaknesses and some useful card synergies. Happy launch day! Today sees the worldwide release of Hero Academy 2, the follow up to the 2011 hit original tactics game. Hero Academy 2 is available from today on Android, iOS for mainstream release but also available on Windows and Mac OS in early access.

The game has been developed by BonusXP in conjunction with Robot Entertainment.

What’s new

The original, award winning Hero Academy was a great formula and the sequel is set to take this to the next level. The most notable change is that Hero Academy 2 will be using real-time matches. This means there will be no more long waits for players to make their moves. Instead players will be making moves there and then, this should greatly speed up the pace of games. There is also a brand new deck builder. Players collect cards of each faction to build up their own unique deck – there are hundreds of combinations! There is both single player campaigns, challenges as well of course, real-time multiplayer available.

Download now!

All the download links can be found at HeroAcademy2.com. The game is free to download and play on all platforms. Go check it out, ready your card deck and play today!

Hero Academy 2 in development with BonusXP

Hero Academy fans rejoice! The turn based tactics game which proved very popular when it launched in early 2012 is set to get its sequel! The original marked Robot Entertainment’s first mobile game and was not only a hit with players but proved critically successful too, winning the “Best Mobile Game” at the DICE 2013 awards. It will soon be time to return to the Academy with Hero Academy 2 which is being developed by BonusXP.

Bonus who?

You might be wondering who these folks at BonusXP are and you might be interested to know that the studio shares alot in common with Robot Entertainment. BonusXP was founded by Dave Pottinger, John Evanson and Jason Sallenbach who have all helmed from Ensemble Studios. The studio is based in Texas along with Robot Entertainment. BonusXP also has legendary game designer Bruce Shelley on board. This commonality and highly trusted studio staffers makes BonusXP a great partner to deliver Hero Academy 2 whilst Robot continues to work on Orcs Must Die! Unchained.

What’s new

Hero Academy was a great formula and its looking like Hero Academy 2 will retain the core gameplay but will be taking it to the next level. The most notable change is that Hero Academy 2 will be using real-time matches. This means there will be no more long waits for players to make their moves. Instead players will be making moves there and then, this should greatly speed up the pace of games.

It also appears there is a new card collecting mechanic with players choosing the cards to bring into battle. This should mean more diverse matches with wider ranges of strategies. Mechanic improvements like this should really take the game to the next level of additional depth. The visuals have been given an overhaul too. According to the official website:

Hero Academy 2 builds on the original’s amazing tactical gameplay. We’ve added exciting new characters to the familiar fan favorites, all done in full-3d environments. Matches are real-time now. You can also customize your teams by collecting cards and building your own decks.

The game will be coming to both iOS and Android and will be launching some time in 2017. Get excited with the brand new teaser trailer below!
